Othello

The South African premiere of Shakespeare's Othello, adapted and directed by Lara Foot, brings an African perspective to the tragedy, performed in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans. Relocating the action to German colonial South West Africa at the time of the Herero uprising, Foot casts Othello as a Black general within the German militia, caught between ambition and heritage as he returns to his ancestral soil. The production offers a bold, decolonial reading of Shakespeare, confronting the legacies of colonial violence.
